Langtang-Gosaikunda-Helambu

Langtang

The long traverse linking Langtang, Gosaikunda and Helambu

This 14-day trek links three regions in one continuous traverse: up the Langtang Valley to Kyanjin Gompa, back down and across to the Gosaikunda lakes, then over Laurebina La (4,610m) into the Helambu hills before descending to the Kathmandu valley rim at Sundarijal. It shares its first days with the shorter Langtang Valley trek and its Gosaikunda approach with the standalone Gosaikunda trek, but continues past both — the shorter Gosaikunda trek turns back the way it came instead of crossing the pass.

Acclimatisation

3 nights on this itinerary gain more than 500 m of sleeping altitude: Langtang Village (+960 m), Chandanbari (+1080 m), Gosaikunda (+1050 m). 0 of its 1 rest days follow the largest gains. The highest night is 4,380 m.

Sleeping altitude by night, with gains above 500 m marked where the night is above 3,000 m
Day Sleeping at Altitude Gain from previous night Rest day
1 Syabrubesi 1,460 m first night
2 Lama Hotel 2,470 m +1,010 m
3 Langtang Village 3,430 m +960 m (above the 500 m guideline)
4 Kyanjin Gompa 3,870 m +440 m

9 Gosaikunda 4,380 m +1,050 m (above the 500 m guideline)
11 Kutumsang 2,470 m -1,910 m
12 Chisapani 2,165 m -305 m

Cited to the Wilderness Medical Society Clinical Practice Guidelines (2024): above 3,000 m, do not increase sleeping elevation by more than 500 m per day, and take a rest day every 3–4 days. WMS itself notes that terrain often makes strict adherence impossible.

This is itinerary information, not medical advice, and not clearance to trek. Acclimatisation varies between individuals.

Your trip, day by day — all 14 days, travel included

Every day of the 14-day trip in the order it happens, including the flights, drives and rest days that have no walking stage. These are trip day numbers. The next section numbers walking days instead, starting again at 1, so a day number here and a walking day number there are not the same day.

  1. Day 1 of 14

    Kathmandu — Arrival & Orientation

Arrive in Kathmandu and go through permits and briefing ahead of the drive to Syabrubesi the next morning.

  2. Day 2 of 14

    Drive to Syabrubesi (1,460m)

The drive from Kathmandu follows the Trisuli River to Syabrubesi (1,460m), the roadhead for the whole Langtang region.

  3. Day 3 of 14

    Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2,470m)

The trail climbs east up the Langtang Khola through subtropical forest to Lama Hotel (2,470m).

  4. Day 4 of 14

Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3,430m)

Continue up the narrowing valley as forest gives way to alpine scrub, reaching Langtang Village (3,430m), rebuilt by the Tamang community after the 2015 earthquake avalanche destroyed the original settlement.

  5. Day 5 of 14

Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m)

A shorter day as the valley opens wide, passing yak pastures and mani walls to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), the valley-head monastery and site of a small yak-cheese factory.

  6. Day 6 of 14

Day Hike to Tserko Ri (4,984m) — Return to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m)

An acclimatization day spent climbing Tserko Ri (4,984m), higher and longer than the alternative Kyanjin Ri used on the shorter Langtang Valley trek, before returning to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m) for a second night.

  7. Day 7 of 14

    Descend to Lama Hotel (2,470m)

Retrace the Langtang valley trail back down to Lama Hotel (2,470m).

  8. Day 8 of 14

Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru (2,250m)

Rather than descending all the way to Syabrubesi, the trail cuts across to the Gosaikunda side of the region, reaching Thulo Syabru (2,250m).

  9. Day 9 of 14

    Thulo Syabru to Chandanbari (3,330m)

Climb through forest to Chandanbari (3,330m), also known as Shin Gompa, the staging point below the Gosaikunda lakes.

  10. Day 10 of 14

    Chandanbari to Gosaikunda (4,380m)

A steep climb above the treeline to Gosaikunda (4,380m), the sacred alpine lake shared with the shorter out-and-back Gosaikunda trek — this route continues past it rather than turning back.

  11. Day 11 of 14

Cross Laurebina La (4,610m) — Descend to Ghopte

The highest point on the route, crossed on the way to Helambu rather than slept at. The trail descends the far side to an overnight stop at Ghopte.

  12. Day 12 of 14

    Ghopte to Kutumsang (2,470m)

Descend further into the Helambu region, reaching Kutumsang (2,470m).

  13. Day 13 of 14

    Kutumsang to Chisapani (2,165m)

Continue descending toward the rim of the Kathmandu valley, reaching Chisapani (2,165m).

  14. Day 14 of 14

Chisapani to Sundarijal — Drive to Kathmandu

The final descent reaches Sundarijal (1,380m), right at the Kathmandu valley rim, where the same-day drive back into the city ends the trek.

Walking days on the mapped route — 13 days of sourced altitudes

Numbered by walking day: walking day 1 is the first day with a mapped stage. Every altitude below is a waypoint from this route's own sources, listed at the foot of the page.

Walking day 1
  • Syabrubesi 1,460 m overnight

7-9h drive from Kathmandu; the roadhead for the whole Langtang region.

Walking day 2
  • Lama Hotel 2,470 m overnight

    Up the Langtang valley trail.

Walking day 3
  • Langtang Village 3,430 m overnight

Rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake avalanche that destroyed the original village and killed close to 300 people.

Walking day 4
  • Kyanjin Gompa 3,870 m overnight

Valley-head monastery and yak-cheese factory; the base for the acclimatization day.

Walking day 5
  • Tserko Ri 4,984 m day stop

Acclimatization day hike from Kyanjin Gompa — higher and longer than Kyanjin Ri, the alternative used on the shorter Langtang Valley route. OSM's peak node (632393142) carries ele=4985 (delta 1m) — a clean corroboration.

  • Kyanjin Gompa 3,870 m overnight

Second night here — the acclimatization night.

Walking day 6
  • Lama Hotel 2,470 m overnight

    Descend the Langtang valley trail.

Walking day 7
  • Thulo Syabru 2,250 m overnight

Cuts across to the Gosaikunda side of the region rather than descending all the way to Syabrubesi.

Walking day 8
  • Chandanbari 3,330 m overnight

Also called Shin Gompa. Some sourced itineraries name a further intermediate stop 'Cholangpati' (~3,580-3,615m) between here and Gosaikunda; the only OSM node matching that name is a peak (Cholangpatidanda, ele 4,788m) — clearly the wrong feature, not a trailside stop — so it is not used as a waypoint. Chandanbari, the pre-lake staging point in several of the sourced itineraries, is used instead.

Walking day 9
  • Gosaikunda 4,380 m overnight

Sacred alpine lake, 4,380m per Wikipedia. OSM hamlet node ele=4430 (delta 50m) corroborates.

Walking day 10
  • Laurebina La 4,610 m day stop

Highest point on the route, crossed on the way to Helambu, not slept at. OSM node (603105166, mountain_pass=yes, natural=saddle) carries ele=4646 (delta 36m) — a clean corroboration. Ghopte, the customary overnight immediately beyond the pass (~3,420-3,530m in the sourced itineraries), does not resolve to any genuine OSM node in the region query — the only nationwide match for 'Ghopte' is 'Ghopte Dhunga', a Hindu shrine roughly 65km south near Kathmandu, clearly a different place — so it is dropped rather than guessed. The route's overall 14-day count reflects the real overnight at Ghopte even though it is not plotted here; 13 is the count of waypoint-days actually resolved.

Walking day 11
  • Kutumsang 2,470 m overnight

    Helambu region.

Walking day 12
  • Chisapani 2,165 m overnight

Descending toward the Kathmandu valley rim.

Walking day 13
  • Sundarijal 1,380 m day stop

Reached and driven out to Kathmandu the same day — no overnight here. Sundarijal sits right at the Kathmandu valley rim, which is why the Helambu leg of this route needed the padded coordinate-query bbox to resolve at all.

The remaining 1 day of this 14-day trip cover travel to and from the trailhead, and buffer time for delays en route — the specifics vary by route.

Trekkers' Information Management System card: TAAN publishes a further breakdown by trekker type: Blue (group) TIMS NPR 1,000, Green (individual/FIT) TIMS NPR 2,000, SAARC group NPR 300, SAARC FIT NPR 600 — see https://www.taan.org.np/page/about-tims. Applicability in the Everest and Annapurna regions is contested as of the verifiedOn date. NTB's own TIMS page (this source) and TAAN's own TIMS page (https://www.taan.org.np/page/about-tims) both still list Everest and Annapurna trek routes as requiring TIMS, under a provision dated effective March 31, 2023, with no visible update since. Current operator practice, reported consistently across 2026-dated trekking-agency sites, describes TIMS as discontinued in Everest (replaced by the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Trek-Card) and no longer enforced on standard Annapurna routes, with checkpoints there said to verify only the conservation-area permit. We could not find a primary NTB, TAAN or DNPWC circular confirming that change, so neither position is asserted here.
