Everest View & Tengboche
A short window into the Khumbu, as far as Tengboche's monastery.
Everest View & Tengboche is the short route into the Khumbu region, reaching Sherpa country and its Buddhist heartland without the extra week that Everest Base Camp requires. Over seven days the trail climbs through pine and rhododendron forest to Namche Bazaar, up to Hotel Everest View (3,880m) — the highest point on the route — and on to Tengboche's monastery at 3,867m before turning back toward Lukla. The pace stays below the altitudes where routes to Base Camp or the high passes spend their hardest days.

Acclimatisation
1 night on this itinerary gains more than 500 m of sleeping altitude: Namche Bazaar (+830 m). Each of its 1 rest day follows the gain that earned it. The highest night is 3,867 m.
| Day | Sleeping at | Altitude | Gain from previous night | Rest day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lukla | 2,840 m | first night | |
| 1 | Phakding | 2,610 m | -230 m | |
| 2 | Namche Bazaar | 3,440 m | +830 m (above the 500 m guideline) | |
| 3 | Namche Bazaar | 3,440 m | 0 m | Rest day — follows the gain above |
| 4 | Tengboche | 3,867 m | +427 m | |
| 5 | Monjo | 2,835 m | -1,032 m | |
| 6 | Lukla | 2,840 m | +5 m |
Cited to the Wilderness Medical Society Clinical Practice Guidelines (2024): above 3,000 m, do not increase sleeping elevation by more than 500 m per day, and take a rest day every 3–4 days. WMS itself notes that terrain often makes strict adherence impossible.
This is itinerary information, not medical advice, and not clearance to trek. Acclimatisation varies between individuals.
Your trip, day by day — all 7 days, travel included
Every day of the 7-day trip in the order it happens, including the flights, drives and rest days that have no walking stage. These are trip day numbers. The next section numbers walking days instead, starting again at 1, so a day number here and a walking day number there are not the same day.
- Day 1 of 7
Fly to Lukla — Trek to Phakding (2,610m)
The flight from Kathmandu lands at Lukla's Tenzing–Hillary airstrip (2,840m), one of the highest commercial airstrips in the world. From here the trail drops into pine forest along the Dudh Kosi, crossing suspension bridges before reaching Phakding for the night — a net descent, even though the trail rises and falls along the way.
- Day 2 of 7
Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
The trail follows the Dudh Kosi upstream, crossing back and forth on suspension bridges, then climbs steeply above the confluence with the Bhote Kosi. Namche Bazaar sits in a natural amphitheater carved into the hillside — the trading hub of the Khumbu region, and an 830m gain over the day.
- Day 3 of 7
Acclimatization Walk to Hotel Everest View (3,880m)
A rest day built around gentle motion rather than idleness: the walk climbs out of Namche to Hotel Everest View at 3,880m, the highest point the route touches, for a view across the Khumbu toward Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, before the trail drops back down to a second night in Namche Bazaar (3,440m).
- Day 4 of 7
Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,867m)
The trail crosses the Dudh Kosi one more time and climbs through rhododendron and fir forest into the alpine zone. Tengboche's monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region, sits above the treeline, with Everest, Nuptse and Ama Dablam framing the valley beyond — the highest overnight of the trip, and where this route turns back rather than continuing toward Dingboche.
- Day 5 of 7
Tengboche to Monjo (2,835m)
A long descent retraces the trail down through forest and past mani walls, re-crossing the valley floor. Monjo, the Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint village, marks the return to lower elevation and thicker air.
- Day 6 of 7
Monjo to Lukla (2,840m)
The final trekking day follows the Dudh Kosi back down through Sherpa villages and forest to Lukla, closing the loop that began six days earlier at the same airstrip.
- Day 7 of 7
Fly Lukla to Kathmandu
The morning flight back to Kathmandu closes out the trip, seven days after it began at the same Lukla airstrip.
Walking days on the mapped route — 6 days of sourced altitudes
Numbered by walking day: walking day 1 is the first day with a mapped stage. Every altitude below is a waypoint from this route's own sources, listed at the foot of the page.
- Lukla 2,840 m
overnight
Tenzing–Hillary airstrip.
- Phakding 2,610 m
overnight
Net descent on day one.
- Namche Bazaar 3,440 m
overnight
830 m gain.
- Hotel Everest View 3,880 m
day stop
Acclimatization-day walk up from Namche; this route's namesake feature and its highest point, touched but not slept at. OSM way 539960397 (tourism=guest_house, building=yes, wikidata Q3061457) carries ele=3880, an exact match to both the hotel's own site and its Guinness World Records listing as the highest-placed hotel in the world (Guinness itself states 3,962m/13,000ft, a mismatched conversion of the same 13,000ft figure — 3,880m is the figure independently corroborated by the hotel's own site and OSM, and used here).
- Namche Bazaar 3,440 m
overnight
Second night here, after the acclimatization walk up to Hotel Everest View and back.
- Tengboche 3,867 m
overnight
Monastery; the highest overnight stop on this route. Hotel Everest View (day 3) is higher (3,880m) but not slept at — see that waypoint's note. Turns around here rather than continuing to Dingboche.
- Monjo 2,835 m
overnight
Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint village; descent begins.
- Lukla 2,840 m
overnight
Day 7 is the return flight to Kathmandu — no further waypoint.
The remaining 1 day of this 7-day trip cover travel to and from the trailhead, and buffer time for delays en route — the specifics vary by route.
